So Meg was a nerd today
Came up with A) the themes of Harry Potter and then B) the overarching themes/questions of my own story
So
Harry Potter Themes
1. Love is stronger than hate 2. Friendly & maternal love are some of its strongest forms 3. Motherly love can be one of the most positive forces but bad parenting can be one of the most negative forces 4. Love will have its sacrifices 5. Evil does not come from a vaccum, there is always a cause 6. The world is not divided into good people and death eaters - there are bad not death eaters and good death eaters - humans are complex, and we MUST imagine others complexly 7. War is a tragedy, but sometimes it cannot be avoided 8. Hiding the truth does not make it go away -> reality is a fact that cannot be avoided or hidden forever 9. There is always a light to be found in the darkness 10. Bonds forged in fire & cooled in calmness are the strongest of all (here: bonds forged in war, cooled in safety)
Changes Everything Themes
1. What does it mean to have an identity? How much of that identity can be healthily defined based on another person? What does it mean to define one's identity based on anything and what implication does it have for personhood? 2. Evil does not arise from nothing -> so then what is more important? Fighting evil, or destroying the cause of it? how can one truly say they are on the side of good if they still agree with the principles of the evil one, but disagree with their practices? 3. Achieving true, lasting and good change in the world requires sacrifices and thinking about more than yourself. But at what point do you stop? What is truly worth the ultimate sacrifice? In the face of pure evil, can you actually justify self-preservation or selfishness? 4. What good is isolationism? Is it ever truly beneficial? Is it more help to one's society as well as others to be open and giving, or does self-preservation require solitude? Is globalization really the only way to truly function in our world? 5. Some sacrifices & choices appear to have meaning, while others do not. Is that meaningfulness truly there, or is it a projection of our own perception? Can we really know what is good, and what is bad, given our perspective in history? Can there really be an objective "good" ? 6. There is always a light to be found in the darkness - but can that light ever truly exist without imperfections? Is it more beneficial to imagine the world as dark, and assume event he good will disappear? Or is it more important to cling to that light & that hope in order to survive? 7. A mother's love is one of the strongest forms of love -> why? What does it actually mean to be a mother? is being a mother the hardest position? At what point is prioritizing one's children over all selfish - is it ever selfish? 8. What is adulthood? What does it mean to be an adult? At what point can we say 'we've grown up' or do we never truly stop growing? Can you measure the progression of adulthood under extreme or abnormal circumstances, or do such circumstances automatically force one into adulthood? Does being forced into adulthood too fast damage a person? 9. When one's society is focused on conformity to a single standard, what does it mean to not fit that standard? At what point is it dishonest to conform to society's expectations, or is self-preservation always justified? Does anyone truly fit that standard? 10. What implications do bonds forged in war truly have? Is the closeness achieved through such experiences healthy for one's self-image? Is it possible to be too close & too dependent on other people? At what point is it healthy to let such individuals go - is it even possible? 11. Do soulmates exist? Are they a concept invented to comfort the psyche, or are they possible? Are they something achieved through hard work and understanding, or something that just exists naturally? Do they always have to be romantic in nature, or, if they exist, is that existence necessarily partially romantic? Does everyone have one, or need one? Do you only ever have one ? 12. Can progress truly be limited to one sphere? Is it necessary to move forward in every aspect of society in order to truly move forward in one? Does the same idea apply to persons? What does change require, how can it be had, and can it truly be limited or one sided? 13. What power does love truly have? If it is the strongest force, how much can it achieve? To what extent is love capable of driving change & progress, and defeating evil? Can love ever completely defeat evil, or are some things outside of its scope? 14. What is death? What does it man to die? is it ever necessary? Does anyone ever actually deserve it? Can one consider major personality change as a sort of death of identity? Can death ever be selfish? Does death ever actually mean "the end," or does it really mean a new beginning? 15. Can you ever really move on from a traumatic experience? Is it something that will always hurt you, or can you learn to accept it? Is it stronger to move on, or is it weaker to not acknowledge when something bad has happened to you? How can one cope with tragedy, especially tragedy suffered young?
Hopefully you guys enjoy them!
