I had heard Archaeopteryx was sometimes referred to as Urvogel, which in German means Original or First bird, and it got me thinking. Why not have some common names for other prehistoric animals?
For those of you who do not know, a common name is a name used to identify animals without using their scientific name. Like how we call Castor canadensis the North American Beaver. Most people call dinosaurs and other extinct animals by their genus name.
I came up with some in English, since I'm taking Latin and most scientific names are in Latin and Greek. They're mostly direct translations because I cannot be creative at a quarter 'till 11pm.
Ornithomimus velox - Swift Bird Mimic
Alioramus remotus - Distant Different Branch
Sauroposeidon proteles - Earthen Lizard of Poseidon
Kulindadromeus zabaikalicus - Zabaikalian Runner from Kulinda
Triceratops horridus - Bristly Three Horned Face
